The Color of Skin, Imagery, and Religion!

Religious Images

Religion is always a topic that raises eyebrows; many are learning, confused, and in love with their religion; a very complex relationship; today’s issue about religion is:  Was Jesus and is Santa white men?  Lots of talk going on about race and religion; this might be a great time to think about scripture; let it decide for us about religious imagery and skin color.   Both the Holy Bible and the Holy Qur’an mentions both imagery and skin color.  The Holy Bible speaks of “Graven Imagery“:

Exodus 20:4  “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

 The Qur’an goes further:  O mankind! Lo! We have created you from a male and a female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! The noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware. (Holy Qur’an 49:13);

 “Do you not see that Allah sends down from the clouds water, then brings forth with it fruits of different kinds (or colors). And in the mountains there are streaks, white and red, of different colors, and some intensely black. And of people and animals and cattle there are different colors likewise. Only those of His servants fear Allah who possesses knowledge.” (Holy Qur’an 35:27-28)

Even Prophet Muhammad weighted in on the longest running issues of skin color and nationality over 1400 years ago; during his last sermon he stated,  “All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action.”

Could today’s religions continue their successful propagation; find their role; and grow into the much needed force of righteousness as while as a guild for humans; without graven images of the divine?
